Declan Patrick MacManus was born August 25, 1954. Better known by his stage name of Elvis Costello, he got his start in music as a part of London's pub rock scene in the mid-'70s. He formed his first band, Rusty, in 1971; a few years later, he formed Flip City. After he released his demo tape, he was signed to Stiff Records and they urged him to change his name. Taking the first name of Elvis Presley and the Costello maiden name of his grandmother, he decided on the name Elvis Costello. His debut album, My Aim Is True was released in 1977 and saw modest success on the charts.
In December 1977, Elvis Costello and the Attractions appeared on Saturday Night Live. The 1979 release of Armed Forces is regarded by many as the peak of Elvis Costello's commercial success; the follow up to that release, Oliver's Army in 1979, hit No. 2 in the UK. Get Happy!! was released in 1980, and hit No. 2 in the UK and No. 11 on the States. Elvis Costello and the Attractions experimented with a release of country covers, but the album that followed that one was back to pop.
In 1984, Elvis Costello released Goodbye Cruel World and went on his first solo tour that summer. He would not record another album with the Attractions until 1994. Throughout the years, Elvis Costello collaborated with Paul McCartney and the Brodsky Quartet on the Julia Letters. He went on a worldwide tour in 1995, and collaborated with the legendary Burt Bacharach in 1998 for Painted from Memory.
Eventually, Elvis Costello released a handful more albums, and found himself with a residency at UCLA. While there, he had a hand in teaching music throughout the year as well as performing concerts. His most recent release, 2006's River in Reverse, was Elvis Costello collaborating with Allen Toussaint.
