In 1967 he split with the band and changed his name to Elton John; he was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight. Elton John was then teamed up with lyricist Bernie Taupin as staff songwriters for other artists. The duo would stay together through Elton John's most successful years, split in the late 1970s, and later reunite for several projects.

In 1970 Elton John had a breakout Top 10 hit with "Your Song." When he performed at the Troubadour Club in Beverly Hills, Elton John became an instant American success. In 1997 Elton John was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.

In 1994, a toned-down Elton John started a new chapter of his career composing for the film and the musical The Lion King with lyricist Tim Rice, who had also written the words for Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar. Elton John again teamed with Rice to write music for a remake of Verdi's Aida. Elton John also composed music for a West End production of Billy Elliot in 2005.
