Dream Theater formed in 1985 by bassist John Myung, guitarist John Petrucci, and drummer Mike Portnoy while all three were studying at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. John Petrucci's childhood friend Kevin Moore rounded out the quartet that originally called themselves Majesty. All three Berklee attendees decided to drop out of college and concentrate on the band.

In November 1986, singer Charlie Dominici joined the band. Majesty began playing shows in and around the New York City area and had not yet released an album. Their first release was Majesty demos , which sold 1,000 copies in six months. Shortly following that release, Majesty was threatened by another band named Majesty to change their name. Thus, Dream Theater was born. Dream Theater signed with Mechanic (a division of MCA) in 1988 and released their debut album a year later. When Dream and Day Unite and the ensuing tour were disappointments for the band.

Dream Theater found a new singer in Kevin James LaBrie and returned to the studio after a brief hiatus in the mid-‘90s. Images and Woods was released in 1992, and the success of the single "Pull Me Under" brought Dream Theater to new levels. Images and Woods eventually reached Gold status, and Dream Theater toured Europe. Dream Theater returned to the studio in May 1994 and released their third studio album, Awake, in October of that year. Derek Sherinian joined the band as a keyboardist.

Dream Theater released Falling Into Infinity in the mid-‘90s and continued to tour. The 1999 release Metropolis, Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory reached No. 73 on the charts and is regarded by many critics and Dream Theater fans as Dream Theater's masterpiece. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence debuted at No. 46 on the charts, and Dream Theater toured the world yet again. Following more releases, Dream Theater has continued to tour. In June 2005 Dream Theater released Octavarium. Dream Theater is currently set to celebrate their 20th anniversary as a band with a Central/North American Tour in 2006.
