Pianist and singer/songwriter Dr. John was born as Malcolm John Rebennack Jr. on November 21, 1940. His music combines blues, boogie woogie, and rock and roll.
Having been born and raised in New Orleans, Dr. John began his music career in the '50s. In the beginning, he played guitar under the name of Mac Rebennack. Eventually he would change to bass, and then learn the piano. In the '60s and '70s, Dr. John's music managed to combine New Orleans-style rhythm and blues with psychedelic rock. His shows often came close to voodoo religious ceremonies when he donned elaborate costumes and headdresses. Dr. John released Gris-Gris as his debut in 1968. From then on, Dr. John continued to release albums at the rate of about one year.
Briefly billed as Doctor John, Night Tripper, Dr. John is perhaps best known for 1973's "Right Place, Wrong Time." The single reached No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. In addition to his work in music, Dr. John also did vocals for Popeye's Chicken and Biscuits, and the theme song for Blossom. He appeared in Martin Scorsese's Last Waltz and also in Blues Brothers 2000.
