Singer, guitarist and songwriter Tom Johnston and drummer John Hartman formed the beginnings of the Doobie Brothers after being introduced to each other through Skip Spence in 1969. Bassist Dave Shogren and singer guitarist songwriter Pat Simmons joined the band one year later.

Warner Brother Records signed the Doobie Brothers in 1970 after the Doobie Brothers had garnered a strong following in Southern California and with the Hell's Angels. After their self-titled debut in 1971, Shogren was replaced by Tiran Porter; the Doobie Brothers also added drummer Michael Hossack in time for Toulouse Street in 1972. Although it was their second release, Toulouse Street was regarded as the Doobie Brother's break through.

Another album release, and 1974's What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits saw the Doobie Brother's first No. 1 with "Black Water;" the album went on to hit multi-platinum status. During the recording of that album, Hossack was replaced with Keith Knudsen. Jeff Baxter also joined the band in 1974. Johnston needed to be replaced in early 1975 due to health issues, so Michael McDonald was brought in.

With the addition of the former Steely Dan members, the Doobie Brothers' next few releases took on a sound similar to that of Steely Dan. Minute by Minute was released in 1978 and spent five weeks on the top of the charts, and dominated radio the next few years. "What a Fool Believes" was their second No. 1.

By 1979, Hartman left the band and was replaced with Chet McCracken, Baxter with John McFee, and Cornelius Bumpus was also added; Bobby LaKind became an official member of the band rather than a side man. Simmons left in 1982, which meant there were no beginning members of the Doobie Brothers left with the band. They decided to disband. When the band planned to briefly reunite in 1987 for a benefit concert, the demand for tickets was so great they decided to launch a brief mini-tour.

The Doobie Brothers ended up back together with a line up of Johnston, Simmons, Hartman, Porter, Hossack and LaKind. Cycles was released in 1989, and featured the Top 10 hit "The Doctor" and the album went on to become gold certified. The band would emerge again in 1993, and released a double live album in 1996, Rockin' Down the Highway: The Wildlife Concert. Sibling Rivalry was released in 2000, marking their first studio release in nine years. The Doobie Brothers' most recent studio release came in 2003 with Divided Highway and 2004 saw the live release Life at Wolf Tap.
