DMX Information

Rapper DMX was born in Maryland as Earl Simmons in 1970. He later grew up in a Yonkers, New York housing project and spent much of his youth in and out of trouble with the law. He started rapping at age 13, adopting a style he called spellbound with rhymes that relied on spelled-out words. The name DMX was taken from a synthesizer he used but later stood for Dog Man Xtreme, The Divine Master of the Unknown, and Dark Man X.

Often credited with revitalizing Hardcore Rap in the mainstream scene, DMX has crossed over genres, appealing to both hardcore rap audiences, as well as metal, R&B and rock music fans. His single "Get At Me Dog" went gold and was a hit on the rap and dance charts. It paved the way for his debut album, It's Dark and Hell is Hot. DMX had five straight albums debut at No. 1. The strongest selling, 1999's And Then There Was X, went six times Platimum.

DMX has worked as an actor starting with the film Belly. Among his film credits are the features Exit Wounds and Romeo Must Die. DMX has been involved in a series of altercations with the law and has been incarcerated. A 2006 DMX album is expected and much of the album's material has been leaked.
