In 1989, the beginnings of the Dixie Chicks were sister Martie and Emily Erwin, Laura Lynch, and Robin Lynn Macy. The quartet released their first album, Thank Heavens for Dale Evans in 1990. Other than as an occasional opening act for the likes of Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire, and George Strait, the Dixie Chicks had very little exposure at that time.

Their second release, Little Ol' Cowgirl, came out in 1992; shortly there after, Robin Lynn Macy left the band. Now just down to a threesome, the Dixie Chicks released Shouldn't a Told You That in 1993. Two years later, Natalie Maines replaced Laura Lynch. The new trio released Wide Open Spaces in 1998. Over the course of the next 12 months, three singles off the album would hit No. 1 on the country chart and Wide Open Spaces went on to sell 12 million copies.

The 2000 follow-up, Fly, would see nine singles, including two No. 1 country hits. Fly went on to sell 10 million copies, and the Dixie Chicks staged their first-ever headlining tour. The Dixie Chicks also debuted "I Believe in Love" on the America: A Tribute To Heroes telethon following the events of September 11, 2001. Home was released in 2002, on an independent label and went on to sell 6 million copies and garnered Best Country Album and three other Grammy Awards in 2003. However, trouble was brewing.

During a concert in London in March 2003, Natalie Maines took it upon herself to tell the crowd, "Just so you know, we're ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas." That was followed by backlash from a variety of sources in the U.S., ranging from boos at subsequent concerts, to verbal feuding with another artist, to vicious name-calling in the media.

Nevertheless, the Dixie Chicks continued on and released "I Hope" in 2005 as part of the Shelter from the Storm: A Concert for the Gulf Coast telethon for Hurricane Katrina. In May 2006 the Dixie Chicks released their eighth album, Taking the Long Way. It was their first studio release since 2002, and the concert in support of the album was their first tour since 2003.
