Though his dad listened to country, Phoenix native Dierks Bentley grew up in a rock and disco dominated era and wasn't really into country until he was 17. He had fiddled around with the guitar but country gave him the direction he was looking for to get serious. His choice of college near Nashville was no accident. Exposure to bluegrass provided a base for Dierks Bentley. He played dives, bars, and college parties, learning the ropes and moving up to better venues. He studied country music both live and with a job at The Nashville Network.

Dierks Bentley developed his own blend of traditional, bluegrass and modern country. He cut his own album in 2001 and caught the attention of Capitol Nashville. Touring 300 days a year left little time to record a sophomore album. Dierks Bentley made a 10-day stop, slept in the studio, and released a self-titled album in 2003. "What Was I Thinkin'" went No. 1 and two more hit singles followed. Dierks Bentley won the CMT Flameworthy Award for breakout video, a CMA nomination, and the ACM's Top New Artist.

Avoiding many of the trappings of fame, Dierks Bentley went on to record Modern Day Drifter, released in 2005. The single "Come a Little Closer" brought Dierks Bentley his second No. 1 hit on the country charts. Dierks Bentley tours all over the U.S., considering it a labor of love. Unlike many stars Dierks is his real name; it was a family name.
