Devo is one of the bands that helped usher in the synth pop sound of the 1980s with their New Wave music. Devo gradually adopted mostly or entirely synthetic instrumentation, becoming one of the first American acts to perform on stage using only synthesizers. Their live concert is often characterized by kitsch science fiction themes, deadpan surrealist humor, and satirical social commentary.

Formed in Akron, Ohio in 1972 Devo was founded by Gerald Casale, Mark Mothersbaugh, and Bob Lewis, students at Kent State University at the time the National Guard shot and killed four students at a protest against the U.S. invasion of Cambodia. Bob Casale (rhythm guitar), Rod Reisman (drums) and Fred Weber (vocals) were added to the original lineup. Devo costumes often mocked pop culture, many remember their red "flower pot" hats or their yellow chemical-protection suits.

Devo's big break came in 1976 when their short film The Truth About De-Evolution won a prize at the Ann Arbor Film Festival; David Bowie and Iggy Pop saw the film and their involvement led to a recording contract. Their third album, 1980's Freedom of Choice, included their best-known hit, "Whip It", a danceable song with a video that was played frequently in the early days of MTV.

Maintaining a strong international fan base Devo stopped recording and full-scale touring in 1990 but they have reunited for short tours since 1996. Current members includeMark Mothersbaugh; Bob Mothersbaugh; Gerald Casale; Bob Casale; and Josh Freese.
