The alternative band Depeche Mode uses synthesizers to define their sound. Depeche Mode started with dance and pop-oriented music but went on to develop a more dramatic sound and sometimes focused on social themes. Members of Depeche Mode played together in other bands beginning in 1976. In 1980, singer David Gahan was brought in to join Chris Clarke, Andrew Fletcher, and Martin Gore and the band name became Depeche Mode. By that time Vince Clark had left to form Yazoo.

After a few singles, the song "Just Can't Get Enough," became a Top Ten U.K. hit. The 1981 Depeche Mode debut LP, Speak and Spell, was also a success. When the main songwriter Vince Clarke left to form another group, Martin Gore stepped up and the lyrics took on a darker, more serious tone. Depeche Mode recruited keyboardist Alan Wilder. Depeche Mode released an album in 1983 but 1984's Some Great Reward was their real breakthrough. It featured "People Are People" which brought success in the U.S. as well as Europe. Two successful albums followed and a sold out tour was recorded for a double live album.

Despite an enormous fan base, Depeche Mode was considered very much an underground cult phenomenon. The release of 1990's Violator changed that, hitting Top Ten and spawning the hits "Enjoy the Silence," "Policy of Truth," and "Personal Jesus." The 1993 album Songs of Faith & Devotion entered the charts at No. 1 confirming Depeche Mode's techno sound was a worldwide success.

Depeche Mode hit hard times when Alan Wilder left the band in 1995. Then David Gahan attempted suicide while battling a heroine addiction that he later kicked. Four years later Depeche Mode released an album as a trio, then another in 2001. The members released solo projects and later regrouped. In late 2005 Depeche Mode released Playing the Angel, following up with a successful tour after more than 25 years playing together.
