orn February 18, 1947, Dennis DeYoung is best known for his role with Styx as their vocalist, keyboardist, and driving force. While he was growing up in Chicago, his singing career started at the age of 14 when he and 12-year-old neighbors Chuck and John Panozzo formed a three-piece band. They would add James Young and John Curulewski in the late '60s and call themselves Tradewinds. They changed their name to Styx in 1970.
Dennis DeYoung is a self-taught keyboardist who also plays the accordion. Many remember Dennis DeYoung as the man behind the synthesizer solos that were an important aspect of Styx's sound. Songs created by and played by Dennis DeYoung often featured the grandiose style of traditional '70s theatrical rock. When Tommy Shaw left Styx in 1984, Dennis DeYoung experimented with is first solo release.
Desert Moon saw a Top 10 hit in the single by the same name, and "Don't Wait For Heroes" hit the Top 40 as well. Dennis DeYoung released two more albums before Styx returned to the studio for Edge of the Century in 1990. During 1993, Dennis DeYoung joined a touring revival of Jesus Christ Superstar, making 200 stage appearances throughout North America.
When Dennis DeYoung was diagnosed with a chronic fatigue syndrome-type illness in 1998, Styx decided to use that as an excuse to part ways with him in 1999. A lawsuit was settled, giving Styx their name but allowing Dennis DeYoung to use "the music of Styx" or "formerly of Styx." In February 2000, Dennis DeYoung performed at the Rosemont Theatre, which inspired a tour across North America with a 50-piece orchestra and a five member rock band.
Dennis DeYoung released The Music of Styx Live with Symphony Orchestra in 2004 and has plans to release a new studio album in 2007.
