In 1977 Def Leppard was formed in Sheffield, Yorkshire by Pete Willis and Rick Savage and Tony Kenning, with the original name Atomic Mass. They acquired their current name after being joined by Joe Elliott. The group had rented a Small abandoned spoon factory for rehearsals. In 1978 they picked up a guitarist named Steve Clark. Their first gig was played at Westfield school July 18th. They were paid $5 out of a teachers pocket. In November drummer Tony Kenning was fired and replaced by Frank Noon and Def Leppard recorded their first EP. On November 28th that same year Rick Allen was hired as a permanent drummer. 1979 saw Def Leppard getting their first airplay.

And soon after they were signed by Phonogram and Mercury. On March 14th, 1980, their debut album On Through The Night was released. In July 1981 they released their second album High 'N' Dry. In 1982 Pete Willis left the band and was soon replaced by Phil Collen (formerly of Girl). In January 1983, their third album, Pyromania, was released to critical acclaim. On December 31st 1984, just outside Sheffield, Rick Allen's met with an accident as his car overturned and he was thrown out the car, severing his left arm. The Doctors failed to reattach the limb. In 1985 Rick got a Simmons electric drum kit and with determination began to practice drumming with only one arm. In 1986 Def Leppard perform the Monsters of Rock Tour. It was to be Rick Allen's first performance since his accident and he was accepted with open arm's. In August 1987 Def Leppard's fourth album, Hysteria, was released. The album with 7 of the tracks released as singles and sold over 15 million copies, and was a huge success.

In 1989 the band played a new single Tear it Down at the MTV video music awards. It was the last show Steve Clark played. On January 8th 1991 in London, Steve Clark died, after a long battle with alcoholism. He was 31 years old. In April 1992 Vivian Campbell joined the band and their fifth album Adrenalize was released. It would later become Def Leppard's biggest selling album to date. In 1993 their newest album, and the first to feature Vivian Campbell, Retro Active was released in August. In 1995 their Greatest hits album, Vault was released in October. The next year, 1996, their next studio album, Slang, was released in May. On March 16th 1999 the album Euphoria was released. The latest album to date, X, was released in 2002. The band went on a long tour to support X.

Two years later, Def Leppard would release their Best Of worldwide; the North American version, Rock of Ages, The Definitive Collection was released in 2005. The UK, United States, and Canada all saw the release go platinum. Def Leppard's most recent release, Yeah! came in 2006, and consisted of nothing but covers. Included in the collection are covers of David Bowie, The Kinks, Blondie, and Electric Light Orchestra.

Def Leppard continues to have one of the strongest fan followings of bands from the '80s.
