The rock band Death Cab for Cutie got together in Bellingham, Washington in 1997. Guitartist Ben Gibbard started Death Cab for Cutie as a side project when he was playing with the band Pinwheel. Together with Christopher Walla he released a cassette that had surprising success called You Can Play These Songs with Chords. Bringing in Nicholas Harmer on bass, and Nathan Good to play drums the band released the LP Something About Airplanes in the summer of 1998. Good left the band before 2000 replaced by Michael Schorr and then Jason McGerr.

After a few more albums Death Cab for Cutie released Transatlanticism in 2003. The album earned critical acclaim and sold 225,000 copies the first year. Tracks from the album appeared in the soundtrack of the television shows and films The O.C., Six Feet Under, The Wedding Crashers, and Mean Creek. The 2005 Death Cab for Cutie album Plans earned a Grammy nomination.

Death Cab for Cutie takes their name from a satirical song recorded in 1967 by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. In 2003 Ben Gibbard embarked on another successful side project The Postal Service, with Dntel's Jimmy Tamborello.
