David Gilmour has worked solo, played in several bands, and collaborated with with a who's who of rock stars, but he is most remembered as the lead guitarist for Pink Floyd. David Gilmour was born and grew up in Cambridge, England. He met Syd Barrett, who would later help found Pink Floyd, during college. Although they enjoyed playing guitar together they would not become bandmates for five years. David Gilmour joined the band Jokers Wild in 1963 later forming a new band in 1966 with many of the same members. His band, Bullitt, disbanded by late 1967. Pink Floyd asked David Gilmour to join the band in 1968. He shared the stage with Syd Barrett for only a few months before Barrett was left out of the band due to battles with mental illness. David Gilmour would later help Syd Barrett enter and re-enter the music scene as a soloist.
As a strong song writer and guitarist David Gilmour made enormous contributions to the success of Pink Floyd. He shared lead vocals as well. Gilmour released his first solo album David Gilmour in the spring of 1978. He wrote "Comfortably Numb," but did not use it solo, later developing it to become the Pink Floyd classic. Still a member of Pink Floyd, David Gilmour released his second solo album, About Face, in 1984. A power struggle with Roger Waters resulted in a break up of Pink Floyd in 1985. Yet David Gilmour led the rest of Pink Floyd to another album A Momentary Lapse of Reason.
David Gilmour then spent years as a session musician and a producer, playing strong roles in the success of Kate Bush and The Dream Academy. Famous for his blues influenced guitar work, David Gilmour can also play bass guitar, drums, keyboards, and saxophone. David Gilmour has collaborated with Roy Harper, Grace Jones, Tom Jones, Elton John, Arcadia, Bryan Ferry, Berlin, David, Crosby, Graham Nash, Robert Wyatt, Hawkwind, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Sam Brown, Jools Holland, Propaganda, Pete Townshend, The Who, Supertramp, Warren Zevon, and Alan Parsons.
After a 20-year wait David Gilmour is back touring on his own. The former Pink Floyd guitarist, song writer, and vocalist released a new solo album in March 2006 entitled On An Island. The 60-year old David Gilmour is scheduled to perform songs that span his vast career. On An Island, the third David Gilmour release, is his first solo venture since 1984.
As a member of Pink Floyd, David Gilmour was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. He was made a Commander (CBE), one level below a knight, for his substantial philanthropic contributions both musically and economically. On July 2, 2005, Gilmour played with Pink Floyd -- including Roger Waters -- at Live 8, prompting rumors of a reunion. David Gilmour squelched those rumors extolling the simplicity of working solo.
