Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, is the head of Tibetan Buddhism. From the 17th century through 1959 this position ruled Tibet as well. The occupation of the Tibet by The People's Republic of China forced the Dalai Lama and members of the Tibetan government into exhile. He and a democratically elected Tibetan administration now maintain residence in Dharamshala India.
The Dalai Lama advocates a nonviolent approach to free Tibet. He speaks to the masses in India, sharing his teachings for free over several days. He embraces science and sees the role of Buddhism as a grounding force reminding us of our human nature. He is the first Dalai Lama to travel West. When he tours internationally, tickets must be purchased and reserved.
In 1989, the Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He will serve as the Dalai Lama until his death, when he is believed to be reincarnated and the search for his new incarnation, a child, will begin.
