Coldplay guitarist Jonny Buckland and singer Chris Martin met in September 1994 while attending University College London. Bassist Guy Berryman joined the band a few years later, and Coldplay was complete when drummer Will Champion joined in January 1998. The first Coldplay EP, Safety , was released in May 1998 and Coldplay was signed by indie label Fierce Panda. Coldplay released another EP in February 1999 while on that label. June 2000 saw the release of their debut album Parachutes in the UK. Parachutes wasn't released in the United States until November of that year. While it reached No.1 on the UK charts, it only managed to hit No. 51 in the U.S. Even so, Coldplay earned a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album in 2003.

The follow-up to Parachutes was the August 2002 release A Rush of Blood to the Head . Many critics regarded the album as a much more sophisticated effort by Coldplay then their debut album. Coldplay toured for over a year covering five continents. That tour turned Coldplay into a bona fide stadium act. During that touring time, Coldplay also released their Live 2003 album, which was recorded at the Horden Pavilion in Sydney, Australia. A Rush of Blood to the Head garnered two Grammy awards for Coldplay, including Best Alternative Music Album.

After taking some time off, Coldplay released their third and most recent album, X&Y in June 2005. The album hit No. 1 in both the United States and the UK, and became one of the fastest-selling albums in the UK. In promotion of the upcoming release, Coldplay performed a series of secret shows which ultimately resulted in sold-out concerts in Boston, Chicago, New York, and Toronto. Since June of 2005, Coldplay has been traveling around the world on their Twisted Logic Tour. The 2006 Twisted Logic Tour includes another trip around Canada and the United States, as well as various Australian dates for Coldplay.
