Coheed & Cambria, a progressive rock band from Nyack, New York, officially began in 2001. The band originally formed as Shabutie in 1995. After performing a poppy metal/indie rock sound for many years, they decided to shift gears and in the process and change their name. Coheed & Cambria are noted for writing scores of songs, many of which never get used. Coheed & Cambria releases concept albums, all telling the same story in different parts. But the albums are being released out of sequence and details of the story can be difficult to decipher, leading to fan speculation.

Four members make up Coheed & Cambria: Claudio Sanchez (vocals/guitar), Travis Stever (guitar), Michael Todd (bass), and Josh Eppard (drums). When playing live, Dave Parker (keyboards/guitar), joins the lineup. Coheed & Cambria has been compared to the progressive rock stylings of Rush.

The first Coheed & Cambria album, 2002's The Second Stage Turbine Blade, was picked up by Equal Vision Records. In fall 2003, Coheed & Cambria released In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3. It was recorded in Japan in between tours with The Used. Their first appearance on the 10th annual Vans' Warped Tour in summer 2004 and their first headlining European tour coincided with the successful "A Favor House Atlantic" single. The 2005 album Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Vol. 1: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness is the third of five planned albums following the same storyline. In 2006 Coheed & Cambria joined Avenged Sevenfold for a U.S. tour.
