Musical talent abounds for this band that was formed nearly 40 years ago. Known for their strong use of horns, Chicago started out as a rock band and their sound has softened through the years. The former DePaul University music students made up an unusually versatile line-up of instrumentalists, including saxophonist Walter Parazaider, trombonist James Pankow, and trumpet player Lee Loughnane, along with guitarist Terry Kath, keyboardist Robert Lamm, drummer Danny Seraphine, and bassist Peter Cetera (who was the last to join the original group). Chicago started as a cover band called The Big Thing in 1967. After a move to Los Angeles their first album was released under the name The Chicago Transit Authority and later shortened to Chicago.
Chicago debuted with an unheard of double album that achieved moderate success. The band was multi-talented and more than one lead singer led Chicago to the top of the charts. The follow up album Chicago was a commercial breakthrough for the band; it is also known as Chicago II. Each album of the prolific band Chicago is titled with the band name and Roman numerals. Chicago albums topped both the pop and jazz charts throughout the 1970s but their first No. 1 single, "If You Leave Me Now," came in 1976, winning Chicago their only Grammy Award.
After the 1978 accidental death of singer and guitarist Terry Kath, Chicago began recording more pop and ballads. Recording with new producer David Foster, guitarist Chris Pinnick, and keyboardist/guitarist/singer Bill Champlin, Chicago emerged in 1981 with another chart topping single, "Hard To Say I'm Sorry." The next album, Chicago 17, spawned two more Top 10 singles and became the biggest selling album of the band's history. Peter Cetera left the band in 1985 to pursue a solo career and was replaced by bassist/singer Jason Scheff. Dawayne Bailey from Bob Seger's Silver Bullet Band was hired to replace guitarist Chris Pinnick. Chicago's Chart success continued through 1988 with their 19th album.
Chicago's popularity waned as they entered the 1990s and a series of personnel changes took place. Today four of the six founding members of Chicago, (major songwriters Robert Lamm and James Pankow, plus Lee Loughnane and Walt Parazaider) still record and tour with the band. Bill Champlin, Jason Scheff, Tris Imboden, and Keith Howland make up the rest of the Chicago lineup. After a series of compilations and greatest hits releases, Chicago released an album of new material.Chicago XXX was released on March 21, 2006. A 2006 tour coheadlining with Huey Lewis & the News followed.
