Charlie Hunter made a name for himself simultaneously playing both bass and guitar parts on his specially designed eight-string guitar. For four years the skills of saxophonist John Ellis and drummer Derek Phillips rounded out the Charlie Hunter trio. Drummer Simon Lott and pianist Erik Deutsch now make up the ensemble.

Charlie Hunter grew up in Berkley and took guitar lessons from Joe Satriani before fame found Joe. He hooked up with poet/rapper Michael Franti. Occasionally performing together as a duo, Franti formed the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy a band that ended up opened for U2.

Charlie Hunter went on to create a more jazz-oriented sound. Forming the Charlie Hunter Trio with a high school friend and a former tour mate the band released an album on a smaller label. In 1995, Charlie Hunter Trio released their first major label record, Bing, Bing, Bing. The Charlie Hunter trio made Jazz accessible to a younger audience. With a few lineup changes the new band was named TJ Kirk. Then a series of solo works and collaborations followed. He is currently touring with new members of The Charlie Hunter Trio.
