After you've written songs for Elvis Presley and worked on several Bob Dylan albums before you've even released your first album, you have definitely earned your stripes. Born in 1936, Charlie Daniels recorded his first solo album in 1970. In 1972 he hit No. 9 with the novelty song "Uneasy Rider." By 1975 he was leading the Charlie Daniels Band and "The South's Gonna Do It Again" was in the Top 30. The singer, fiddler and guitarist from North Carolina could easily shift from country to Southern rock and jazz. He took home a Grammy in 1979 for his most famous song "The Devil Went Down to Georgia." The song hit No. 3 and became a staple in many music collections.
The Charlie Daniels Band continued to score hits in the 1980s and early 1990s. Later that decade Charlie Daniels would record several gospel and Christian records. He has recorded nearly 50 albums to date. Today members of the band include Taz Di Gregorio, Charlie Hayward, Bruce Brown, Pat McDonald, and Chris Wormer.
In 2003 he published a book Ain't No Rag: Freedom, Family, and the Flag. Charlie Daniels has often been politically outspoken and his views are reflected in his music as well as the book. He still organizes a series of volunteer jam concerts around Nashville. This tradition has continued almost every year since 1974.
