French singer/songwriter/actor Charles Aznavour was born May 22, 1924 as Charles Varinag Aznavourian. He has sold over 100 million albums, and is one of France's most popular and enduring singers.

His career began with his first stage performances at the age of 9, when he also took on the stage name Aznavour. He also spent his adolescent years touring with theatrical companies and writing song lyrics. Charles Aznavour learned how to overcome his vocal fears while chauffeuring Edith Piaf. While he worked on developing his style, Charles Aznavour wrote songs for Edith Piaf.

At first, Charles Aznavour found it difficult to be accepted as a composer in France, much less anywhere else. During the late '40s and early '50s, his compositions were deemed to risque for French radio, and he was then banned from the radio for over a decade. The U.S. felt the same way, and Charles Aznavour spent his next 10 years as a performer in second-tier clubs. Finally, he had a break through in 1956 when he was moved to headliner status. It would then become easier and easier for Charles Aznavour to get gigs in France. He signed his first record contract in 1958.

A big reason for Charles Aznavour's success is due to the fact that he can sing in six languages. While he was composing music for himself and other performers, Charles Aznavour continued to have roles in movies, with over 60 in all. Charles Aznavour has been compared to the likes of Frank Sinatra and Mel Torme. So far, Charles Aznavour has released almost 5 dozen albums.
