Canadian singer Celine Dion is one of the biggest international pop stars in pop music history. Her albums have sold over 100 million worldwide. While French was her first language, Celine Dion learned English in as little as three months. Her bilingual ability has played a big part in her success.
When Celine Dion released her debut in 1983, she became the first Canadian to have a gold record in France. She followed that up with a gold medal at the Yamaha songwriting competition in Japan. That was the first of many awards over the course of the illustrious career of Celine Dion. Celine Dion's reputation was starting to spread around the world, but she was yet to find success in the United States. In order to find success in the U.S., her manager told her to take a year and a half off to refine her image and further her knowledge of the English language. Celine Dion emerged a new woman, ready to take the U.S. by storm.
Celine Dion's hit song for Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" movie hit No. 1 and earned her both a Grammy and an Academy award. The 1992 release of her self-titled album had a Top 10 hit and two other Top 40 singles. Two years later she married her manager, Rene Angelil, despite their 26-year age difference. From 1992 until 1996, Celine Dion recorded six albums. It wasn't until her Falling Into You release that Celine Dion reached a whole other level of success. She won a Grammy award for Album of the Year and for Best Pop Album and was asked to perform at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. She followed that up with the hit "My Heart Will Go On," the theme song from the movie Titanic. Following her whirlwind years, Celine Dion also appeared on VH1's Divas Live, and went into a brief retirement in 1999.
During her retirement, her husband was diagnosed with throat cancer. While he responded well to the treatment, the scare made Celine Dion stop and think about a family. Two years later, she gave birth to her son. In March 2002, she released her first album in years, A New Day Has Come . A New Day Has Come debuted at No. 1 in 17 countries. In early 2002, Celine Dion signed a three-year, 600-show agreement with Caesars Palace. Celine Dion agreed to appear five nights a week in a production entitled "A New Day". A custom-built 4,000-seat theatre was constructed just for her performances. "A New Day" showcases her many hits throughout the years, and is performed in both English and French. "A New Day" is scheduled to run through 2006.
