Carol Burnett got her start with bit parts in theatre and television. Broadway brought her the first taste of success. In 1962 Carol Burnett won an Emmy for "Outstanding Performance in a Variety or Musical Program or Series" on The Gary Moore Show. She turned down an offer from friend Lucille Ball to star in a sitcom in favor of developing a variety show. The Carol Burnett Show ran from 1967 to 1978 dispelling network executives doubts that a woman could sustain a variety show. It earned 22 Emmy Awards and was the last successful major network variety show. Millions of Americans welcomed Carol Burnett into their homes and laughed until she ended each show tugging her ear, which was a message to the grandmother who had raised her. The show also launched the spin off Mamma's Family .
Following her variety show Carol Burnett acted in a number of dramatic and comedic television and film roles. Most recently she guest starred on Desperate Housewives. She has been married three times and has three children. Together with her late daughter, actress Carrie Hamilton, she wrote a play which appeared on Broadway. Carol Burnett has earned more People's Choice Awards than any other woman in history.
