Joey Burns and John Convertino met in LA in 1990 and Burns joined Convertino's band Giant Sand. That led to two more bands together and a few name changes before they settled in as Calexico. Their first album, Spoke, was initially a limited release but was reissued in 1997 by their new label. They recorded two more albums touring often and sometimes still playing with Giant Sand.
Calexico joined with two French friends Naim Amor and Thomas Belhom to record Tete a Tete, released in 2001. A few albums later and Calexico would team with Miami folk band Iron & Wine. Together they recorded In the Reins in 2005. It became the first album to make the Billboard 200 album charts. The current lineup has expanded to include Joey Burns (guitar and vocals); John Convertino (drums and percussion); Paul Niehaus (steel guitar); Jacob Valenzuela (keyboards, trumpet and vibes); Martin Wenk (accordion, guitar, synthesizers, trumpet, vibes); and Volker Zander (standup bass).
