Pianist and composer Burt Bacharach was born May 12, 1928. He studied music at both McGill University and the Mannes School of Music. Burt Bacharach was the pianist, arranger, and bandleader to Marlene Dietrich in the '50s and '60s. But Bacharach would then team up with lyricist Hal David during the '60s and '70s.
Throughout the years, Burt Bacharach's songs have been covered by the likes of the Carpenters, Aretha Franklin, Jack Jones, Tom Jones, and Luther Vandross, to name a few. His Easy Listening music is known for its distinctive melodies, sophisticated style, and light classical feel.
To his credit, Burt Bacharach has 52 Top 40 hits over the course of his four-decade career. He also has scored various films, including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, for which he and Hal David won Oscars for Best Original Score and Best Theme Song for "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head." In England, Frankie Vaughn, Cilia Black, Sandie Shaw, the Walker Brothers, and Herb Alpert all had No. 1 hits with the help of Burt Bacharach and Hal David.
His first hit came in 1957 when "The Story of My Life" from Mary Robbins hit No. 1 in England and in the Top 20 in the United States. Burt Bacharach and Hal David also worked on the musical Promises, which earned them Tony and a Grammy Awards. When Hal David, Dionne Warwick, and second wife Angie Dickinson all left him, he released a self-titled album in 1971. It was over a decade before Burt Bacharach had another hit. In 1986, Burt Bacharach had two No. 1 hits in the States: "That's What Friends Are For" and "On My Own."
Burt Bacharach worked with Elvis Costello to collaborate on Painted From Memory in 1998; his first album featuring his own lyrics would come in 2005 with At This Time, which was also his most recent release. The list of performers who Burt Bacharach has worked with is very long and features some of the best known names in music including Patti Page, Perry Como, the Drifters, Roberta Flack, Dionne Warwick, and Patti LaBelle. The television show American Idol paid tribute to the work of Burt Bacharach in 2006.
