Burning Spear Information

The Jamaican roots reggae singer and musician Burning Spear is also known as Winston Rodney. Rastafarian messages of honesty, peace, and love permeate his music. Born in 1948 in St. Ann, Jamaica, Burning spear was heavily influenced by Bob Marley and Marcus Garvey. Bob Marley helped launch Burning Spear's career.

Religious and political messages of Rasta and black unity are found in much of his music. Since the beginning, his songs have implored listeners to fight oppression in all its forms, to work at improving their own condition and to consider the social impact of their actions.

Burning Spear has more than 50 releases to his credit. He won a Grammy Award for "Calling Rastafari." 2005's Our Music is the second release on his own label.
