Bruce Frederick Springsteen was born on September 23, 1949 in the small town of Long Branch, New Jersey, and grew up nearby in Freehold. In 1956, Bruce Springsteen knew that he wanted to be a musician after seeing Elvis' appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. He approached Tex and Marion Vinyard, a local couple who helped young musicians. The couple recruited Bruce Springsteen to play in a group called the Castilles. The group, which was composed of four Freehold high school students, played at local clubs and events.
In 1968, the group broke up and Bruce formed a new group called Earth. In 1972, Bruce dismantled his group and began to focus on a solo career. Through several of his contacts, he got an audition with Columbia records and signed a record deal. Later in 1972, Bruce gathered his old friends from Asbury Park, N.J. and recorded their first album, Greetings from Asbury Park. This group of friends would later become know as the E Street Band. In 1973, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band produced their second album, The Wild, The Innocent, & The E Street Shuffle. In 1975, after continuing to only have marginal success, Bruce brought in Jon Landau, a critic for Rolling Stone and one of Bruce's strongest supporters, as co-producer.
In September of 1975, the group released their third album, Born to Run. This album gained immediate attention and reached no. 3 on the Billboard charts. The record was also big overseas, and the band went to Europe to do a string of concerts. In 1977, Bruce and his band began recording a new album, Darkness on the Edge of Town. Springsteen quickly began to tour again in 1978, after the album was complete. In 1982, Bruce recorded his first solo album, Nebraska, which received very little attention at the time. The first Bruce Springsteen music video, Atlantic City, appeared on MTV later that year.
In 1983, Bruce spent much of his time recording new material and did not tour at all. Born in the USA was released in 1984, eventually reaching No. 1 on the Billboard charts. One of the songs on the album, "Dancing in the Dark," won Bruce his first of many grammy's for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.
In 1985, the band toured internationally, and upon their return, Bruce married Julianne Phillips. In 1989, Bruce divorced Julianne Phillips and officially announced the breakup of the E Street Band. The band took it hard, and each headed their separate ways. The next year, Patti Scialfa, the E Street Band's back up singer, and Bruce had their first son. In 1991, Patti and Bruce were married and had their first daughter. In 1992, Bruce released two new albums. The following year, Bruce recorded the song "Streets of Philadelphia" for the motion picture Philadelphia and won an Academy Award. In 1994, Bruce and his wife had their third child. In 1998, Bruce was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and on December 8, Bruce announced his long awaited reunion with the E Street Band.
During the next several years, the band would tour extensively and new songs would come out periodically, such as "American Skin" and "City of Ruins." In 2002, Bruce released the album The Rising, in dedication to the terrorist attacks of 2001. It was his first album created with the E Street Band in nearly 20 years.
In 2006 Bruce Springsteen released We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions. The album varies in style and focuses on folk, gospel and blues through the use of older American songs.Copyright © 2001-2008 BuySellTix.com, All Rights Reserved.
