Bruce Randall Hornsby was born November 23, 1954. Best known for his "The Way It Is," the singer/pianist/accordion player/songwriter was also a member of the Grateful Dead. He got his start in 1984 when he formed Bruce Hornsby and the Range. They were signed to RCA Records in 1985.

"The Way It Is" would be Bruce Hornsby's first and biggest hit. The album by the same name went multi-platinum and saw another Top 5 hit with "Mandolin Rain." He would go on to win the Best New Artist Grammy Award in 1987. Bruce Hornsby would then appear on stage with the Grateful Dead on the keyboards; he made appearances on and off until the Dead ended in 1995. The Range would break up after the 1990 release of A Night On the Town.

Harbor Lights, Bruce Hornsby's debut solo album, was released in 1993. Bruce Hornsby has worked with Pat Metheny, Branford Marsalis, Jerry Garcia, Phil Collins, and Bonnie Raitt, to name a few.
