Dynamic Duo Brooks & Dunn
The songs from Kix Brooks & Ronnie Dunn strike a universal chord among audiences from all over the map. After years of playing alone and with other bands, Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn teamed up in their thirties and the combination was gold. Ronnie Dunn usually serves as the lead vocalist while Kix Brooks plays guitar and works the stage.
Ronnie Dunn grew up attending 13 schools in 12 years. His father, a former singer and a former convict, turned him on to hard-hitting honky tonk music. Ronnie Dunn's mother was grounded by her faith. That led Ronnie Dunn to study theology at Abilene (Texas) Christian College while playing nights at the local beer joints. Eventually Ronnie Dunn decided to chase the music he had been playing rather than devote his life to religion. But Ronnie Dunn brought with him a sense of the extremes of human behavior. Ronnie Dunn moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to sharpen his skills on stage.
In Tulsa, Ronnie Dunn ran with members of some well known bands and cut a demo with members of Eric Clapton and Bonnie Raitt's bands. That led to Ronnie Dunn's eventual victory in the Marlboro Country Music Talent Search. A Ronnie Dunn tape with "Boot Scoot Boogie" and "Hard Workin' Man" made its way to Arista Records head Tim Dubois. Dubois wanted to record one of the songs with Asleep at the Wheel. That led to Nashville but Ronnie Dunn only met limited success on his own.
Leon Eric "Kix" Brooks III got his nickname after kicking his mother repeatedly while in the womb. He lost his mother before he was 5 and was raised by his father and grandmother. Kix Brooks grew up in swampy Louisiana, where beer joints meant a party and performers either got the crowd dancing or they were dead. People came to "raise hell and have a good time," said Kix Brooks. He worked the club circuit in Alaska and Maine then Kix Brooks tackled New Orleans before moving to Nashville in 1979. After an open mic, Kix Brooks was offered a job as a staff songwriter at Don Gant's Golden Bridge Music. He fared well, but longed to perform. The Kix Brooks song "Modern Day Romance" became a No. 1 hit for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. His song writing opened doors to help Kix Brooks release a solo album, which was not very successful.
In 1990, Arista Records' Tim DuBois put Kix Brooks together with Ronnie Dunn. The duo's first single "Brand New Man," rocketed to No. 1 in 1991. The Brooks & Dunn debut album Brand New Manproduced five straight No. 1 hits including "My Next Broken Heart," "Neon Moon," and "Boot Scootin' Boogie." Album number two Hard Workin' Manprovided the chemistry of Brooks & Dunn was no fluke. It yielded five Top 10 singles. Among them was "That Ain't No Way to Go," one of the album's three No. 1 hits. Three successful new albums and a greatest hits followed for Brooks & Dunn. The 1999 album Tight Rope failed but "Ain't Nothing 'Bout You" from Steers and Stripes put Brooks & Dunn back on top in 2001. The song spent six weeks at No. 1, and the follow-up "Only in America" became a rallying cry after the Sept. 11 terrorist attack. Brooks & Dunn continued their streak with the album Red Dirt Road in 2003. The 2005 album Hillbilly Deluxe is an album that revisits the people, places, music, and moments that brought Brooks & Dunn to Nashville.
Brooks & Dunn have sold 28 million albums, earned four Entertainer of the Year Awards and shattered Duo of the Year records for the Country Music Association and Academy of Country Music Awards. Three Neon Circuses also line the award case of Brooks & Dunn. But Brooks & Dunn really knew they made it when they appeared on the front of the Corn Flakes box. The dynamic entertainment duo has performed at the Olympics and a Presidential inauguration.
