Former KC Accidental band members Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning are the driving force behind the Canadian indie-rock band Broken Social Scene. Their debut album in 2001 was mostly instrumental. To improve their live show they recruited a number of friends from the Toronto indie scene. The result was a collective effort on their next album, which included a huge ensemble. Members have included Ohad Benchetrit, Torquil Campbell, Brendan Canning, Jason Collett, Evan Cranley, John Crossingham, Kevin Drew, Leslie Feist, Jo-ann Goldsmith, Emily Haines, Martin Davis Kinack, Lisa Lobsinger, Amy Millan, Dave Newfield, Julie Penner, Justin Peroff, Bill Priddle, James Shaw, Charles Spearin, and Andrew Whiteman. The second album, You Forgot It in People, came out in 2002 and was a critical and commercial success. It won the Alternative Album of the Year Juno Award in 2003. Audiences could relate to its experimental pop songs.
The band's web site calls their sound lo-fi, emotional rock, loud & soft. In 2005 Broken Social Scene released their third full-length album. The self titled album won Broken Social Scene a second Alternative Album of the Year Juno award. Several of the bands song's have been used in feature films. When touring the lineup can change based on the availability of the band members who are working on independent projects.
