Brian Wilson, the founder of the Beach Boys, had no idea the ride that he, his brothers, his cousin, and his buddy Al Jardine were about to embark on would serve as a signature representing the changes in the1960s. As composer of their music Brian Wilson combined the urgency of Chuck Berry with impeccable harmonies. Despite the fact that Wilson is almost totally deaf in his right ear, he wrote a string of international hits between 1962 and 1967, including pop classics such as "Surfin' USA," "Fun, Fun, Fun"," "I Get Around," "Help Me Rhonda," "California Girls," "Wouldn't It Be Nice," and "Good Vibrations." He also co-wrote many of the biggest hits for Jan and Dean as well as producing records for other artists.

He left the Beach Boys when their popularity began to decrease in 1967. He spent several years struggling through drug addiction and mental health issues. He has been diagnosed with Bipolar affective disorder and a schizo-affective disorder. In the late 1980s he launched a solo career but never reached the popularity of his former band. He mended his relationship with his daughters Carnie and Wendy, of Wilson Phillips fame, and the three of them released an album in 1997 titled The Wilsons Ironically, Wilson, long known for using the human voice as an instrument, won his first Grammy Award not for harmonics, but for best rock instrumental with "Mrs. O'Leary's Cow (Fire)" off Smile. His most recent release is the 2005 album What I Really Want for Christmas.
