The oldest son of jazz musician Ellis Marsalis, Branford Marsalis was born in 1960. Branford Marsalis is a gifted jazz musician as are four of his five brothers. Starting his career in the early 1980s he played saxophone with Art Blakely's Big Band and his Jazz Messengers, as well as with Clark Terry, Miles Davis, and Herbie Hancock. He played tenor and soprano saxophone for three years with his brother, Wynton Marsalis, and his group. Then he played back up for Sting.

Leading his own group by 1986 the lineup eventually consisted of pianist Kenny Kirkland, bassist Bob Hurst, and drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts. Jay Leno named him as musical director of The Tonight Show in 1992. But Branford Marsalis didn't like the sidekick role, leaving after two years. Known as an innovator he has continued to record a variety of genres including hip-hop and jazz, classical, R&B, and rock. He won a Grammy Award in 2000. Braggtown, released in 2006, is his most recent album. In addition, he has developed a number of collaborative efforts including one with his father and brothers and projects with Harry Connick Jr. Together with Connick and Habitat For Humanity, Marsalis is helping build a Musician's Village in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. The initiative will provide modest affordable housing for musicians in an effort to help preserve the city's rich musical heritage.
