The Boston Pops are a smaller part of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Boston Pops are a festival orchestra. They play a lighter kind of music. Popular music is played along with well-known classical pieces and hits from musical theater. Boston Pops increased the accessibility of classical music to the public. In addition to their reserved schedule the Boston Pops performs several free concerts. They have also been televised on the local public television station. Many other Pops orchestras have been modeled after the Boston Pops.
In 1930 Arthur Fiedler, the first Boston Pops conductor, began his 50-year tenure. He was followed by Academy Award-winning composer John Williams in 1980. The current conductor, Keith Lockhart, took over in 1995. Lockhart brought in numerous pop-music acts to play with the orchestra, including Rockapella, Guster, My Morning Jacket, Aimee Mann and Elvis Costello.
