Bonnie Raitt was always a talented musician, but it was her 10th album that finally brought worldwide attention to this accomplished singer, guitarist and songwriter in 1989. With a blend of Blues and rock Bonnie Raitt developed a signature style she would play for more than 35 years. The daughter of a Broadway actor Bonnie Raitt started to play guitar at age 12 and became one of the few women to play bottleneck guitar. Critics loved her for years and other musicians respected Bonnie Raitt. She played alongside many blues giants.
Beginning with her first album in 1971 Bonnie Raitt albums featured soulful vocals. Raitt scored her first significant pop airplay with her hit cover of "Runaway." Bonnie Raitt was a committed activist championing anti-nuclear benefits as well as other social issues. Hundreds of benefit concerts were backed by Bonnie Raitt.
After ten years in the music business Bonnie Raitt was struggling with drugs and alcohol. Her record company dropped her after her 1982 album Green Light. Bonnie Raitt released a disappointing album in 1986. Bonnie Raitt's career was on the downslide. She shocked many music insiders when her next album Nick of Time hit it big. Seemingly out of the blue, the album won four Grammys, including Album of the Year. Overnight Bonnie Raitt was a superstar. The1991 follow up Luck of the Draw was a smash success. Acclaimed albums followed but they did not duplicate the success of their predecessors.
Bonnie Raitt stretched the boundaries, performing with artists as varied as Cape Verdean singer Cesaria Evora, and legends B.B.King, Tony Bennett, and Willie Nelson. Bonnie Raitt continues to collaborate on a number of projects with other artists. Bonnie Raitt was inducted into both the Rock and Roll and the Hollywood Hall of Fame. In 2005, Bonnie Raitt produced her first album, Souls Alike. It was the 18th album Bonnie Raitt had recorded.
