Born in 1951 to the hosts of an early television variety show Bobby Caldwell took up piano and guitar as a preteen. He formed his first band in the late 1960s playing rock-oriented music. In the late 1970s he scored a few hits on the R&B charts, most notably "What You Won't Do For Love," which hit the top of the pop charts as well. The song would go on to be reused by many artists including Tupac Shakur. His music was soulful, but his record studio originally tried to hide the fact that he was white, fearing that the R&B market wouldn't accept him. Yet many black artists would appreciate his music and go on to record his hits, including The Notorious B.I.G. and Vanessa Williams.

Bobby Caldwell developed an enormous following in Japan. He took a break from recording and composed songs for other artists. Boz Scaggs, the Commodores, Chicago, Al Jarreau, Peter Cetera and Amy Grant have all achieved success with Bobby Caldwell songs. When he returned to recording his audience remained loyal. He transitioned from R&B to smooth jazz in the early 1990s as the music climate changed. He has gone on to record soul standards written by others as well as big band standards. Caldwell released Perfect Island Nights in 2005, his first album of mostly original studio material since 1993.

He has also contributed music or written songs for a number of films. Among them are Back to School, Mac & Me, Ghostbusters 2 and LakeBoat. In 1999, Bobby Caldwell received the "Lifetime Achievement Award in Music" at the 10th annual Heroes and Legends Awards. He has also received music awards in Japan, the equivalent to an American Grammy.
