Bob Dylan Information

Born Robert Allen Zimmerman Bob Dylan taught himself to play the guitar and the piano and later a host of other instruments. After forming several high school rock bands Bob Dylan moved on to clubs while studying ant the University of Minnesota. From there Bob Dylan moved on to trendy Greenwich Village clubs landing a record contract in 1961.

Joan Baez helped Bob Dylan gain national prominence recording several of his songs and the two became lovers. The acoustic/folk song Blowin in the Wind was the first breakout hit for Bob Dylan. And Like a Rolling Stone went on to be named No. 1 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Considered The Voice of Protest, Bob Dylan music captured the idealistic youthful voice during one of America's most turbulent times. After recording The Times They are A Changin' Bob Dylan was feeling the trappings of stardom. Many of the other artists of his generation credited Bob Dylan as influencing them to write deeper more socially significant material. Ironically, when some of the greatest social change was occurring, Bob Dylan was in seclusion for three years following a motorcycle accident.

Best known for his folk and folk-rock songs Bob Dylan has also dabbled in country, rock, Christian music, jazz, and blues. His poetic lyrics spawned dozens of hits. Bob Dylan songs have been covered by nearly 3,000 artists, including Jimi Hendrix, U2, Dave Matthews Band, Sheryl Crow, Johnny Cash, Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker, Diana Ross, Rod Stewart, Elvis Costello, and The Beach Boys. As his music varied his chart success waned but Bob Dylan concerts were always popular.

Bob Dylan continued to record new music. In 1988 Bob Dylan joined Beatle George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, and Jeff Lynne of Electric Light Orchestra to form the Travelling Willburys. The band released two albums and experienced moderate success. Bob Dylan has earned several Grammy Awards and a 2001 Golden Globe and Academy Award for best song, among his many other accolades. He is a dedicated grandfather and the father of six including the singer/songwriter Jakob Dylan of The Wallflowers and the director Jesse Dylan.
