American psychedelic/heavy metal band Blue Oyster Cult got together in the late '60s. Their most popular songs are arguably "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" off of their 1976's release Agents of Fortune and "Burnin' for You" from Fire of Unknown Origin, which was released in 1981.
Blue Oyster Cult released their self-titled debut in 1972, and released a few more albums before Agents of Fortune. "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" hit No. 12 on the Billboard charts, and Agents of Fortune went gold. "Burnin' for You," from Fire of Unknown Origin hit the Top 40.
Shortly after that, Blue Oyster Cult lost and had to replace a number of members. By the time 1987's Club Ninja was released, Blue Oyster Cult only had two remaining original members. The band broke up shortly there after.
When they got back together it had been 10 years since they released an album when they released Heaven Forbid in 1998. (Imaginos has been released in 1986.) Blue Oyster Cult's most recent release was in 2001 with Curse of the Hidden Mirror.
The name Blue Oyster Cult comes from a poem written by manager Sandy Perlman in 1960.
