While Chris Wink, Matt Goldman, and Phil Stanton (often referred to as CMP) were living in New York City in the 1980s, they tried their hand at performing in the streets as plenty of other people had before them. The trio performed short skits while dressed in full Blue Man Group regalia. When the black-clothed, blue-bodied threesome was spotted by then-Artistic Director Meryl Vladimer of "The CLUB" at La MaMa Experimental Theater Club, she helped them build a full-length show called "TUBES." "TUBES" took off when The New York Times critic Stephen Holden reviewed it. Eventually, CMP won an Obie Award and a Lucille Lortel Award, both of which led to "TUBES" going off-Broadway. Blue Man Group first performed in 1991 at the Astor Place Theater. Since then, Blue Man Group opened in Boston, Chicago, Las Vegas, Berlin, Toronto, and London, all of which are still running today. Many Blue Man Group locations look for new members to join their team either as a Blue Man Group performer or a member of the Blue Man Band. What began as just a show using tubes has since evolved into something much more. While Blue Man Group is known for their black clothing and blue hands and heads, there is more to the performance than just the three men. Many of the instruments the Blue Men Group uses are somewhat common materials. PVC pipes play a large part in the performance; various foods and paint are also in the program. Rock music plays on and off throughout the performance as well. Blue Man Group has also made various television appearances as themselves. They have been on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno over a dozen times, were in an introduction to The Simpsons, have made television commercials, and were a subplot on the second season of Arrested Development, to name a few. Blue Man Group has also released three albums and a video.
