Singer Deborah Harry formed Blondie in New York in 1974 after a stint with the bands Wind and the Willows and the Stilettos. Guitarist Chris Stein joined Blondie after the Stilettos as well. Drummer Clement Burke, bassist Gary Valentine, and keyboard player James Destri formed the initial lineup. Valentine was later replaced by Frank Infante.

They released their first album, Blondie, in 1976. The punk/new wave group initially had more success in the U.K. The third Blondie album brought the band worldwide success. The single "Heart of Glass" brought Blondie to No. 1 in the U.S. as well. A series of singles continued to chart respectably in the U.S. and Blondie earned three No. 1 hits in the U.K. by the time the fourth album Eat to the Beat finished its run.

Blondie's fifth album, Autoamerican fared well. "Call Me" was in the film American Gigolo and Blondie again enjoyed chart success. Some Blondie songs were disco influenced, "The Tide is High" had a reggae flavor, and even early rap influences were found. The style was eclectic but the members of the band weren't all happy about the direction Blondie was taking and legal issues ensued. The band members pursued solo projects in 1981 and reunited for their sixth and final album.

Illness broke up Blondie in 1982. In 1998, several Blondie members reunited for their first tour in 16 years. In 2006, Blondie joined The New Cars for what Blondie members called "their last and final tour." Blondie achieved the most commercial success of any artist in the punk/new wave genre of the 1970s.
