The Black Eyed Peas began when will.i.am (born Will Adams) and apl.de.ap rapped and performed together in 1989. Thee years later, the two of them were signed to Ruthless Records, along with their friend Dante Santiago. They called themselves Atban Klann, but never released a debut album. In 1995 Atban Klann was renamed the Black Eyed Peas and replaced their third member with Taboo (born Jamie Gomez). Kim Hill was recruited as a back up singer, and the band was on their way.
The Black Eyed Peas chose to perform with a live band, unlike other hip-hop groups, and began performing on the local club scene. Once they were signed to Interscope Records, the Black Eyed Peas released their debut Behind the Front in 1998. The follow-up Bridging the Gap was released two years later. The 2003 breakthrough Elephunk featured a new female voice in Stacy "Fergie" Ferguson, who replaced Kim Hill. Elephunk featured the hit "Where is the Love?," which rose to No. 8 on the charts. Elephunk stuck gold or multi-platinum in many countries, including the United States, the U.K., and Germany. The single "Let's Get It Started" earned the Black Eyed Peas a 2005 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.
The 2005 release Monkey Business debuted at No. 2 on the charts in the United States, and went on to be certified as triple platinum. The single "Don't Phunk With My Heart" earned the Black Eyed Peas their second Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. Later that year, The Black Eyed Peas released an iTunes Essentials playlist including "Don't Lie," "Shut Up," and a new version of "Where Is the Love?". Elephunk sold over 5 million copies worldwide, while Monkey Business has sold more than 8 million.
