The Black Crowes have sold over 15 million albums since they began as Mr. Crowes Garden in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1985. Chris and Rich Robinson are the only two mainstays in the Black Crowes, as members have changed through out the years. Influenced by the Rolling Stones, The Faces, and Southern rock, the Black Crowes made their first demo tape in 1989. That got them signed to American Records.

Shake Your Money Maker was released in 1990. It would go on to sell over 5 million copies and was certified 5x platinum five years later. The Southern Harmony, released in 1992, would sell 2 million copies; however, 1994's Amorica would only sell 500,000 copies for gold status.

Releases in 1996 and 1997 saw trouble for the band as various Black Crowes members were either fired or left the band. In 2001, the Black Crowes released their sixth studio album, Lions, which was followed by a live album in 2002. That same year, the Black Crowes announced they were taking a hiatus.

The Black Crowes were reunited in 2005, and teamed up with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers for a summer tour. In 2006, the Black Crowes released their first-ever DVD Freak n'Roll into the Fog. Later in 2006, the Black Crowes have plans to release a two-disc collection of songs taken from Tall and Band, two previously unreleased Black Crowes albums.
