Country singer and songwriter Billy Joe Shaver was born in Texas in 1939. The country outlaw is remembered for his 1973 album Old Five and Dimers Like Me. He has written many songs for other country artists. Most of the songs on the Waylon Jennings album Honky Tonk Heroes were written by Billy Joe Shaver. He wrote the hit "Live Forever" performed by The Highwaymen. Artists such as Patty Loveless, Kris Kristofferson, and Willie Nelson have also recorded multiple Billy Joe Shaver songs.
Abandoned by his parents and raised by his grandmother, Billy Joe Shaver quit school after eighth grade to work the farm. He joined the Navy, then worked a series of random jobs before he lost part of his fingers in a sawmill. He got his start in Nashville as a songwriter. He recorded his first album in 1973 and spent the next three decades in and out of the spotlight recording 20 albums. In the 1980s his son, Eddy, began playing guitar on all of his records.
Billy Joe Shaver suffered tremendous personal tragedy losing his wife, son, and daughter-in-law within two years of each other. He suffered a heart attack while on stage but went on to record again. His most recent release is 2005's Real Deal. Shaver was inducted into the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame in 2006.
