Bill Engvall was poised for success when his "big break" came -- a 1992 appearance on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. For a comedian a spot on The Tonight Show traditionally meant you had made it or you were about to. But for Bill Engvall it didn't lead to work. However, the same year Bill Engvall was named Best Male Standup at the American Comedy Awards, delivering the Bill Engvall name from obscurity.
Bill Engvall said he moved a lot as a child and so he used my sense of humor to make friends quickly. After starting out during amateur nights Bill Engvall honed his skills by watching guys like Garry Shandling, Robin Williams, and Jay Leno at the Dallas Comedy Corner. Bill Engvall saved and worked on his material in St. Louis. In 1989 Bill Engvall hosted the Pair of Jokers cable special with Rosie O'Donnell. Then the former Dallas nightclub DJ arrived in Los Angeles in 1990 with a pregnant wife and big dreams.
Bill Engvall appeared on Evening at the Improv. Continuing to perform stand up, an appearance on Designing Womenfollowed. That would later lead Bill Engvall to a regular role on the short-lived spin-off Delta in 1992.
In 1996 Bill Engvall released his debut album, Here's Your Sign. His most famous bit, "Here's Your Sign," proposes hanging signs on people who are stupid, so others would know not to rely on them for anything. Bill Engvall turned it into a song by country music star Travis Tritt, furthering its success.
Bill Engvall toured with Jeff Foxworthy in the late ‘90s. The albums Dorkfish in 1998 and Here's Your Christmas in 1999 were followed by Bill Engvall's 2000 release of Now That's Awesome. Bill Engvall embarked on the Blue Collar Comedy tour with Jeff Foxworthy, Larry the Cable Guy, and Ron White in 2000. The tour catapulted Bill Engvall and the Redneck Ratpack into the national spotlight as the most successful comedy tour in history and a hugely popular DVD. Bill Engvall released 2002's Cheap Drunk: An Autobiography and 2003's Here's Your Sign: Reloaded. The 2004 Blue Collar TV television show brought back three of the original comedians with Ron White making guest appearances. And Bill Engvall rounded out the year with the album A Decade of Laughs
In 2006 Bill Engvall along with the Redneck Rat Pack are scheduled to embark on the third Blue Collar Comedy Tour. Bill Engvall has been married for 22 years and has 2 children who provide fodder for his routines. He has made multiple appearances on "The Tonight Show," the "Late Show with David Letterman," and Jimmy Kimmel Live.
