Born William Henry Cosby, Jr., in Philadelphia, PA, in 1937, Bill Cosby is the oldest of four sons. His father, William Cosby, Sr. was actively involved in the U.S. Navy, which left young Bill Cosby often helping his mother and watching his younger brothers. Like his father, Bill Cosby dropped out of high school to join the Navy in 1956. He took correspondence courses to finish his studies and pass the high school equivalency exam. After his discharge Bill Cosby attended Temple University on an athletic scholarship, while planning to become a physical education teacher. Bill Cosby worked as a bartender in various clubs to support himself, where he also entertained the patrons. He gained a following and was encouraged to pursue a career in standup-comedy. During his sophomore year Bill Cosby left school and moved to New York City to perform in Greenwich Village nightclubs.
Jazz enthusiast Bill Cosby also flirted with a music career, after having a Top 40 hit as a singer in 1969 with "Little old Man." He has won several Grammy awards. Bill Cosby also went on to earn his doctorate from the University of Massachusetts. He now stresses the importance of education within the black community.
