Ben Harper was born in Claremont, California. He began playing guitar as a young boy, including the acoustic slide guitar. His first release was an LP, Pleasure and Pain, that he recorded with another Folk Guitarist, Tom Freund. Following the limited release of that album, Ben Harper was signed to Virgin Records. His debut full-length album, Welcome to the Cruel World, was released in 1994 and garnered plenty of positive reviews.
Ben Harper released Fight For Your Mind one year later. Fight For Your Mind not only showed a more political and mature side of Ben Harper, but it also introduced the Innocent Criminals. The Innocent Criminals are Ben Harper's backup band. Two years later, Ben Harper released The Will to Live, and expanded his popularity to college and adult alternative radio stations. Following that release, Ben Harper and The Innocent Criminals toured with R.E.M., Pearl Jam, Radiohead, and a Tribe Called Quest, among others. The 1999 release Burn to Shine included "Steal My Kisses" and "Suzie Blue," both of which were popular on college radio. The 2001 release Live From Mars included a critically acclaimed double-LP with both electric and acoustic discs.
Diamonds on the Inside was released in 2003 and was the first album to be credited only to Ben Harper and not The Innocent Criminals in almost a decade. Ben Harper participated in the Vote for Change tour to benefit Moveon.org in effort to encourage in the swing states to vote in the 2004 Presidential election. Ben Harper recently released what would turn out to be a Grammy award-winning compilation with The Blind Boys of Alabama called Their Will Be a Light. Over the summer of 2005, Ben Harper went on a small tour that previwed a number of songs that are anticipated to be on his forthcoming album. Ben Harper is currently on tour to promote Both Sides of the Gun, a two-disc set that is anticipated to be released in March 2006.
