Belle and Sebastian Information

Named after a children's book Belle & Sebastian is an indie pop band that uses instruments such as flute, cello, or trumpet, those not often found in pop music. The lineup includes Stuart Murdoch, Stevie Jackson, Chris Geddes, Sarah Martin, Mick Cooke, Bobby Kildea, and Richard Colburn.

Stuart Murdoch met bassist Stuart David started the band in 1996. The band grew to a larger lineup including Isobel Campbell who brought cello/vocals to the mix for six years. Their first singles were recorded as part of a Stow College's Music Business course on the college's label. That led to a record deal. The band's music became increasingly successful getting farther with each release but they rarely topped the charts. Releasing seven albums in ten years the most recent is 2006's The Life Pursuit. In January 2005, the band were voted Scotland's greatest band in a poll by The List, beating Simple Minds, Idlewild, Travis, Franz Ferdinand, and The Proclaimers, among others.
