Bela Fleck Information

Bela Fleck was born July 10, 1958 in New York City. Best known for his Flecktones, Bela Fleck mixes acoustic and electronic music with roots in folk, bluegrass, funk, and jazz. Bela Fleck first began playing the banjo at the age of 15. After his time at the New York High School of Music and Art, Bela Fleck went to Boston and played with Jack Tottle and Mark Schatz in the band Tasty Licks.

Bela Fleck would release a few albums with the Tasty Licks, and then formed Spectrum: the Band along with Schatz in 1981. After that, Bela Fleck performed with the New Grass Revival for nine years. During that time, he released a solo album Drive which was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1988.

That same year, Bela Fleck formed the Flecktones with Victor Wooten, Howard Levy, and Roy Wooten. Bela Fleck and the Flecktones have been nominated and won several Grammy Awards. Bela Fleck has received more Grammy Award nominations in more categories than any other performer.
