The Beach Boys, one of the most influential bands in the history of rock and pop, began in Hawthorne, California, in 1961. Dozens of Top 40 singles and various best-selling albums later, and the Beach Boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.

In the beginning, Brian, Carl, and Dennis Wilson joined with their cousin Mike Love and their friend Alan Jardine to form the Beach Boys. Carl and Dennis' deaths and Brian's departure from the band have seen the Beach Boys go through various struggles throughout their history. Despite officially breaking up in 1998, the Beach Boys name now belongs to Mike Love and Bruce Johnston, who tour with their own band but as the Beach Boys.

The fact that they hail from California is evident in many Beach Boys songs. The Beach Boys were very up-and-coming in the '60s along with the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Byrds, and James Brown. By 1963 the Beach Boys had three albums, three Top 10 hits, and were constantly touring. Brian Wilson would decide that touring was too much for him, so he opted to work from the studio instead. With Brian Wilson in the studio, the Beach Boys began to experiment with different sounds.

The Beach Boys saw 1966's Pet Sounds as their first release that failed to hit gold since their debut. Smile was their next album, but Brian Wilson began spending less time on it, and backed out of it completely by May of 1967. Around the same time, the Beatles were beginning to usher in a more psychedelic sound, and the Beach Boys managed to quickly regroup to release Wild Honey that same year.

The Beach Boys released more albums in the '70s, and decided to concentrate more on their live show. The double LP Endless Summer, released in 1974 and featuring repackaged hits, went No. 1 and spent almost three years on the charts. Brian Wilson would make his return to the Beach Boys following a large contract signing with CBS in 1979. However, the next few releases did not fare well, and tension was again starting to mount. By 1982, Brian Wilson was removed from the band and Dennis Wilson drowned one year later. In 1985 the Beach Boys got back together to release their self-titled album and their last release of that decade.

Mike Love and Brian Wilson would begin writing songs together by the early '90s, despite the previous times when the Beach Boys had sued Brian Wilson. By the time 1999 came around, there were three Beach Boys-associated units touring the country in the likes of a solo Brian Wilson tour, the "official," Mike Love-lead Beach Boys, and the Alan Jardine-led Beach Boys Family. However, Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston, and David Marks would reunite in 2006 for a celebration of their 40th anniversary of the release of Pet Sounds.
