An amazing recording history of more than 50 successful albums is only one aspect of Barbra Streisand's multifaceted career. Barbra Streisand uses her voice as a vehicle to achieve a range of ambitions. Barbara Streisand is the only artist to earn the Oscar, Tony, Emmy, Grammy, Golden Globe, Cable Ace, Peabody, and the American Film Institute's Life Achievement Award.

Born in 1942 in Brooklyn, Barbra Streisand graduated from high school early and pursued an acting and singing career. She struggled briefly as an actress and nightclub singer in New York in the early '60s Winning a Greenwich Village talent contest was her first break. In 1962 Barbra Streisand landed her first part in a Broadway show, I Can Get It for You Wholesale. She stole the show, earned a Tony nomination, and was featured on the cast album. Her first television appearance was on Judy Garland's television show, opposite Garland's daughter Liza Minnelli and Broadway institution Ethel Merman.

Her first solo album, The Barbra Streisand Album, was released in 1963. It became a Top Ten, gold-selling record. Barbra Streisand also married actor Elliot Gould that year. They had one son and divorced in 1971. Three successful albums followed but, rather than do a concert tour, in 1964 Barbra Streisand opted to star in the Broadway show Funny Girl, in which she appeared for more than two years. A 1965 Emmy Award winning television special My Name is Barbra followed, it would be the first of many. Noted for her strong comedic abilities and powerful soprano voice, Barabra Streisand's talent would lend itself to many facets of entertainment.

Barbra Streisand filmed the movie version of Funny Girl, for which she won and Oscar. A few film flops followed and rock music was dominating the charts so her career may have looked like it was slowing down. But she recorded a cover of Laura Nyro's upbeat "Stoney End" and hit the Top 10 again. Then she starred in the comedy The Owl and the Pussycat which brought her success in film without relying on a musical performance. Along with Paul Newman and Sidney Poitier, Barbra Streisand formed First Artists Production Company in 1970 to secure properties and develop movie projects for themselves.

The smash success The Way We Were followed spawning a hit theme song that became her first number one single. A Star Is Born, which featured her second number one single, "Evergreen," a song she co-wrote that won another Oscar. From that point on, every album she released sold at least a million copies. Several collaborations brought Barbra Streisand to the top of the charts in the late '70s and early '80s including a duet with Neil Diamond, "You Don't Bring Me Flowers"; "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)," a dance record sung with Donna Summer; and "Woman in Love" written and produced by Barry Gibb. In fact, Gibb wrote and produced her entire Guilty album which became her best selling album. The two would reunite for the 2005 album Guilty Pleasures. By 1980 Barbra Streisand was named the most successful and influential female singer in the U.S., with only Elvis Presley and The Beatles having sold more albums. Barbra Streisand has won 8 Grammy Awards and 2 special career awards as well as 38 Grammy nominations. And she accomplished this all in an era where rock dominated the airwaves.

Barbra Streisand wrote, starred in, produced, and directed Yentl in 1983. She would continue this path acting and directing in two more films: The Prince of Tides in 1991 and The Mirror Has Two Faces in 1996. All the while Barbra Streisand continued to record.

In 1994 after a 27-year absence from the stage Barbra Streisand took to the concert stage overcoming her legendary stage fright. Ticket prices ranged from $50 to $1,500 -- making Streisand the highest paid concert performer in history and the concert sold out in less than 1 hour. A Top 10 album of the event followed.

In 1998 Barbra Streisand married actor James Brolin. She spent the first years of the 21st century exploring the medium of television. She served as executive producer for such TV projects as The Long Island Incident, Frankie & Hazel, What Makes A Family, and Varian's War.
