The B-52's "Rock Lobster" propelled them to fame in 1978, even though it was an underground hit well before hitting the charts. Their debut album The B-52's featured that single, and peaked at No. 59 on the charts. It would eventually become certified platinum.

Wild Planet was the follow up released in 1980. It was certified gold and the single "Private Idaho" became the B-52's second Hot 100 hit. Around that same time, the B-52's performed on Saturday Night Live. In the '80s, the B-52's would experiment with their sound by adding electronic and drum machines into the mix.

After taking some time off following the death of band member Ricky Wilson in 1985, the B-52's returned in 1989 with Cosmic Thing. Cosmic Thing featured the hit single "Love Shack," which brought the B-52's back into the spotlight on its way to hitting No. 1 on the charts. More releases later, and the B-52's found themselves in the early '90s.

Cindy Wilson took some time off from the B-52's in 1990. Now down to only a trio, the B-52's released Good Stuff in 1992, and would appear in the 1994 The Flinstones movie. The B-52's released Time Capsule: Songs for a Future Generation in 1998, and Nude on the Moon: The B-52's Anthology in 2002. There are tentative plans for a B-52's release in 2006.
